"Pâtes" versus "pasta"
|
Abstract |
An examination of attitudes within the Anglophone and Francophone communities in Quebec towards the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF), and the absurdity of some of the OQLF's decisions, including its 2013 ordering an Italian restaurant in Montreal to use the French word “pâtes” instead of the Italian word “pasta” on its menu. The result of this so-called "Pastagate" debacle, according to the author, illustrated that linguistic intolerance was just as entrenched today in Quebec as it was in 1976.
