Abstract |
Though often thought of as a solitary hobby, the practice of collecting is nevertheless dependant on the collector’s integration within diverse and numerous networks. The author discusses the essential role of epistolary correspondence networks in the constitution of private collections in Montreal during the last third of the 19th century. Among the collectors mentioned by the author are David Ross McCord and William Cornelius Van Horne. By examining some of the different modes of acquisition, the author found it was possible to note the fundamental nature of correspondence networks in the constitution of particular collections, as well as identifying the various actors who made up the collector’s correspondence network, most notably merchants, other collectors, artists and local agents. The author concludes that written correspondence was an inevitable component of the practice of collecting which certainly had many advantages, but also carried certain risks.
