Abstract |
A study of the relationship between Canada's Jewish community, especially those living in Quebec, and French- and English-Canadians. According to the author, Jews, even those who were French-speaking, were never accepted into Canada's French community in the period under review. They were accepted into the English Quebec community prior to the mid-1800s in order to bolster that community's numbers against the Francophones. However, in the latter part of the nineteenth century, limits were set on their integration into the English-speaking community. Jews then began to develop their own autonomous community life, yet they continued to ally themselves with the Anglophones, especially for economic reasons.
