Abstract
On August 6, 1860, more than 60,000 people attended the inauguration ceremony of the Victoria Bridge, the first bridge to link Montreal to the south shore. This nearly two-mile long span was then the longest bridge in the world and considered an engineering feat. On the occasion, James Hodges (1814-1879), the bridge's chief engineer, presented the Prince of Wales, who attended the inauguration, an illustrated book on the building of the structure. The book, a copy of which is in the Port of Montreal Archives, explains the trials, tribulations and techniques associated with the building of the bridge, along with photographs and drawings.
