A Bachelor's Life : Portrait of the Merchant as a Young Man in a Bustling Port City
|
Abstract |
The author points out that the Berthier-en-Haut-born Abraham Joseph (1815-1886), who became a Quebec City commission merchant, banker, and municipal politician, is often described as a man with a well-developed business acumen and a strong sense of social responsibility, with an immense extended family and being a happily married father of thirteen children. However, based on a pre-marriage diary Joseph kept during his first ten years in Quebec City, the author concludes that the entries reveal a fast-maturing but fun-loving young man, at times flighty, sometimes distressed, doing his best to succeed in business while enjoying the social life of the city. The author also outlines Joseph's militia involvement, joining Quebec City's Volunteer Corps shortly after the outbreak of the rebellion in 1837, working his way up within the Quebec Light Infantry to the rank of Major in 1861.
