Abstract |
The Irish-born James Crockett Wilson (1841-1899) immigrated to Montreal with his parents in 1842. In 1870 he established a factory in Montreal to make envelopes and paper bags, the first manufacturer of flat-bottomed bags for grocery stores. He also printed some of Canada's earliest postcards at the factory. In 1880, he established the J.C. Wilson Paper Company in Lachute, and in 1893 he bought a pulp factory in Saint-Jérôme. By the end of the nineteenth century, Wilson’s company was one of the largest paper manufactories in Canada. After his death in 1899, his sons and later their children continued operating the company until the 1950s, when it was sold to Price Brothers, today Abitibi Paper.
