A Study of the Point St. Charles Shops of the Grand Trunk Railway in Montreal, 1880-1917
|
Abstract |
The author concentrates on the choice of Point St. Charles as the Grand Trunk Railway's Montreal terminus and shops in 1853, and the linguistic/ethnic composition of the shop's workforce from 1880 to 1917. The author discovered that employees in the motive power department, mainly a skilled metal working area (boilermakers, blacksmiths, machinists and brass finishers), were predominately Anglophone; employees in the car department, a wood-working area (carpenters, painters and moulders), were majority Anglophone from 1880 to 1896, but became a strong majority Francophone area from 1902 onward.
