Abstract |
A comparative analysis of the languages found on Montreal business signs and advertisements between 1995 and 1997. The Conseil de langue française surveyed 3000 businesses in 1995 and 2000 each in 1996 and 1997. In 1997, as in 1995 and 1996, the Conseil found that French was present (either exclusively or with another language) on almost all business signage on the island of Montreal, rising from 94 percent in 1995 to 97.3 percent in 1997. The presence of English or a third language on signage remained stable in 1995 and 1996, but in 1997 the inclusion of an English message on a sign increased from 45.2 percent to 49.5 percent, and the inclusion of a third language increased from 6 percent to 8.2 percent.
