Abstract |
The history of a former Anglican church in Quebec City. Today, the church building functions as a library. The author points out that St. Matthew's Church, declared a historic monument in 1978, is an admirable example of influences of the ecclesiological movement of the nineteenth-century English religious architecture. The supporters of this movement are inspired by theories of the architect Augustus Welby Pugin and those of the Anglican reformers at Cambridge and Oxford universities. He claims that St. Matthew's church conforms, in all its important aspects, to the ecclesiological vision of an English parish church of the Middle Ages.
