Stained Glass Windows in Montreal at the Turn of the Century
|
Abstract |
One of the first stained glass decorators in Montreal, and probably in Canada, was John C. Spence. His name first appears in Montreal directories in 1856-57. Other individuals and companies mentioned by the author are: Castle and Son, Montreal; Ballantyne and Son, Scotland; Wm. Morris and Co., Merton, England; Sullivan and Sweetman, Liverpool, England; Bromsgrove Guild, London, England; Davis, Archibald J.; LaFarge, John; Tiffany, Louis Comfort; and Hobbs Manufacturing Company Ltd., Montreal. The author discusses the introduction and development of stained glass in Canada, as exemplified by windows found in Montreal, in both churches and non-religious buildings, by both Canadian and British or American artists.
