Abstract |
An analysis of the evolution of the Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal (CECM) policies related to the integration of ethnic minorities in light of the social relationships between the French-speaking and English-speaking and Allophone communities. The author argues that the CECM played a decisive role in redefining the French school system as the primary place for receiving and integrating ethnic immigrant minorities into the French-speaking majority. This was done by progressively adopting a tougher stance on the language of instruction, and by developing a policy on francization and the welcoming of ethnic minorities.
