| Abstract |
A study of the formal associations of Montreal's West Indian community in 1963. The author examines the relationship between new immigrants and the "old-timers", and with Montreal's white community. He offers information on the types of West Indian associations present in Montreal at the time of the study in terms of their ideology and goals, plus information on their organizational structure, hierarchy of offices and roles, formalization of authority and activities, and membership base and recruitment policies. The author also describes the activities of these associations in terms of how their activities met the needs of West Indian immigrants in Montreal, on the individual and the group level, and how these associations were the expression of divisive or cohesive forces in the West Indian immigrant community itself.
