| Abstract |
The author offers an historical analysis of the "Outremont Affair of 1988" – a zoning dispute between the Montreal suburban municipality of Outremont and two Hasidic congregations – and the media fallout it engendered. The author points out that previous studies of the affair failed to contextualize the incident historically, precluding a comprehensive understanding of what transpired. By introducing new evidence and re-examining the collected data, the author argues that while anti-Semitism and language tensions were factors in the affair, considering them as the main or only ones is misleading and inaccurate. Other zoning disputes involving the Hasidim have arisen since the incident. He maintains that taking these into account is necessary for setting the Outremont affair in its historical context and shedding new light on the nature of Francophone-Hasidic relations in Quebec in the recent past and in the present.
