'What My Mother Went Through!': Montreal Women and the Internment of Italian Canadians
|
Abstract |
When Italy declared war on the Allies on June 10, 1940, more than 7,000 Italian Canadians were labelled as enemy aliens. Of these, approximately 640 men and four women were sent to internment camps. Some were soon released, others were detained for as long as three years. The author describes the life of the women in the Monaco family, Montrealers who owned a bakery, when the husband was detained for six months at the Petawawa (Ontario) Internment Camp.
