Abstract |
Maria Leibrok Epsztein (1914-2015) was born in Rudniki Powiat Mociska, Poland. Fluent in six languages and a professor of German literature in Poland, she was a Holocaust survivor. While in the Nazi-run Belarus slave-labor camp with her husband, she gave birth in March 1942 and for two and a half years raised a daughter, Kristina, in the camp until it was liberated by Russian soldiers. The English translation of her book title is "Motherhood Behind Barbed Wire: Memoirs 1940-1980." After immigrating to Montreal in 1967, she worked as a librarian at McGill University before retiring in 1980.
