Catching 'Montréal on the Move' and Challenging the Discourse of Unilingualism in Québec

Abstract |
The author maintains that a complex linguistic dynamic is emerging in Montreal, yet most research on language in Quebec relies on census statistics and survey data, leaving many questions unanswered. Specifically, the author asks, what are young Montrealers who are increasingly bilingual and multilingual actually doing with their languages as they move through the city, and how do they perceive traditional conceptions of language and identity? To answer these questions, the author followed fifteen multilinguals through their daily lives across sites and networks. Her findings reveal a complex portrait of language in Montreal, which she argues challenges the ways of thinking about language and doing research.
