Family Walls, A Costly Inheritance : The Implications of Social Structures in the Fiction of Mavis Gallant
|
Abstract |
Analyzing a selective number of Montreal author Mavis Gallant's (1922-2014) stories, the author examines Gallant's preoccupation with how contexts -- individual settings, family settings, social and political networks -- merge with and reflect one another. The author contends that the "eye" of Gallant's stories shows, over and over again, that the family is a rigid and stultifying structure, maintained by its members to stabilize patterns of response that they find familiar and comfortable. The family, generally portrayed by Gallant as patriarchal and oppressive, constructs a picture of "reality" consistent with the values and prejudices of its most powerful member.
