Title
Men, Women and Bicycles : Gender and Social Geography of Cycling in the Late Nineteenth-Century
Abstract
The authors include a section of their article on the nineteenth-century Montreal Bicycle Club. The Montreal Bicycle Club was formed in 1878 and developed a masculinist vision of a technologically advanced but highly structured society, with codes of conduct and hierarchies. The club also asserted rights-of-use of the road for cyclists in fierce competition with other road users.
