|
Abstract |
Until Vito Rizzuto (1946-2013) went to prison in the United States in 2006 for his role in a 1981 triple murder in Brooklyn, New York, he ruled the Port of Montreal, the northern gateway to the major American drug markets. Born in Sicily, Italy, he immigrated to Montreal in 1954 with his parents, Nicola Rizzuto (1924-2010) and Libertina Manno. By the 1980s, his father had gained control of the criminal underworld in Quebec and Ontario, and Vito Rizzuto inherited the Rizzuto criminal organization from his father. A master diplomat, Vito Rizzuto won the respect of rival mafia clans, bikers and street gangs, and his organization was involved in drug trafficking, gambling, murder, loan sharking, extortion and racketeering. While in prison, attempts were made by rivals to take over his organization, and his son and father were murdered. In 2012, Vito Rizzuto was released from prison and began re-establishing his crime empire, but died of natural causes in December 2013.
