| Abstract |
Twice during the Rebellion of 1837 in Lower Canada, the Glengarry Highlanders of neighbouring Upper Canada were sent to help suppress the insurrection in Lower Canada. The author remarks that the Highlanders role "has been described in mixed terms." One British military officer described the Highlanders as "savages who left a trail six miles wide as they came along...burning and pillaging." The author outlines the problems faced by an imperial garrison when it is forced to call upon local troops to quell strife.
