| Abstract |
A study of the influence of the British garrison on the cultural, religious, social and economic life of Montreal in the first half of the nineteenth century, as well as its role as an aid to the local civil power in times of disorder. Includes information on the garrison's role in supressing the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838, its relationship to the "British Party" or Lower Canadian Tories, its role during the election riots of the 1840s and 1850s and the Gavazzi Riot of 1853, and its influence on the development and training of Montreal's police and fire departments.
