| Abstract |
Francis Valentine Cuthbert Shortis (1875-1941), the son of a wealthy Irish cattle merchant, immigrated to Montreal in 1893. Two years later, in 1895, he was convicted of the murder of two men at the Montreal Cotton Company factory in Valleyfield, Quebec, during a botched robbery. His trial was the longest and most sensational in an epoch of long, lurid, sensational trials. Shortis spent 42 years in prisons and mental hospitals and was released in 1937 -- at the time Canada's longest serving prisoner. The author outlines the importance of the Shortis case in Canadian legal and political history.
