A Very Public Presence: The British Army Garrison in the Town of Quebec 1759-1838
|
Abstract |
An examination of the British army garrison in Quebec City from the Conquest to the Rebellion. The author demonstrates that the garrison was a very public, visible and dynamic presence in the town. He argues that, contrary to what might be assumed, there was a significant degree of interaction between the civilian and military populations of Quebec. He also argues that soldiers in this garrison, who were products of different social circumstances and places in the military hierarchy, played a number of roles in the town ranging from that of serving as ‘cultural standard bearers’ to participants in the maintenance of urban order and catalysts for urban disorder.
