| Abstract |
The author points out that in the middle of the nineteenth century the port district of Quebec City was the heart of the city's social and economic dynamism, and at the same time an area of growing concern to the bourgeois elites about the condition and mores of the working class. Her analysis of the Quebec jail records indicates that public disorder was the dominant category for incarceration at the time. The author discovered that the Irish of Quebec City were disproportionately represented, compared to other ethnic Canadians, in the jail for "petty crimes" during the period 1840-1870. Her analysis also found that the Montreal common prison for the period 1853-1912 also reveals the presence of a disproportionate number of Irish, especially before 1900.
