Abstract |
The author compares and contrasts Montreal's Anglo-Protestant attitude towards women participating in sports and exercise programs with the French-Canadian Catholic attitude. She focuses on two organizations in the city, the single-sex Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), founded in 1875, which opened Montreal's first gymnasium for women in 1909, and the Palestre nationale, which opened in 1919 as a mixed-gender facility for French-speakers. She also compares and contrasts the differing attitudes towards women in sports of two prominent Montrealers: Myrtle Cook (1902-1985), an Olympic gold medalist and later journalist for the Montreal Star, and Cécile Grenier (1907-2003), the assistant director of physical education for the Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal (CECM) and founder of the Institut d'éducation physique.
