|
Abstract |
An analysis of the payrolls of the Point St. Charles shops of the Grand Trunk Railway between 1880 and 1917. From the payroll information the author was able to determine worker ethnicity, hours of work and wages, persistence in the job, and journey to work. The author discovered that employees in the motive power department, mainly a skilled metal working area (boilermakers, blacksmiths, machinists and brass finishers), were predominately Anglophone; employees in the car department, a wood-working area (carpenters, painters and moulders), were majority Anglophone from 1880 to 1896, but became a strong majority Francophone area from 1902 onward.
