Abstract |
A study of the migrant railway labourers who laid the tracks for the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad line in the Richmond-Sherbrooke region of the Eastern Townships at the turn of the 1850s. According to the author, over ninety-five percent of the workers were Anglophones, of which eighty-one percent were born in Ireland. The effects of this hard-working, hard-drinking group on the various communities along the line are described.
