La vie bourgeoise au siècle dernier

Abstract |
The author outlines the social life and reading habits of Quebec City's middle class in the early decades of the nineteenth century. Comparing the personal libraries of the middle class, he notes that the English-speakers had books on the history of England, the life of Wellington, or naval history. The French-speakers had books on the history of France, the New Testament, the Coutume de Paris, and the works of Racine and Molière. Ironically, the author points out, the French books were imported by English-speaking merchants in the city for their Francophone clients.
