Social Thinkers, Social Actors in Winnipeg and Montreal at the Turn of the Century
|
Abstract |
A study of six Canadian urban social reformers at the turn-of-the-twentieth century. Included in this group are Montreal’s Herbert Brown Ames (1863-1954) and William Douw Lighthall (1857-1954). The author contrasts the totally different nature of Montreal’s and Winnipeg’s reformers. The two Montreal reformers were involved in municipal politics, while the Winnipeggers were religious leaders and adherents of the social gospel movement.
