Abstract |
An examination of the inter-cultural relations between Quebec's Francophone and Anglophone elites in the nineteenth century. Focusing on the "mixed-marriage" of the parents of former Quebec Premier Félix-Gabriel Marchand (1832-1900)- his Francophone Catholic father Gabriel Marchand (1780–1852) and his Anglophone Protestant mother Mary MacNider - the author outlines the integration of Gabriel and his brothers into the Anglophone business communities of Quebec City and St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. The author concludes that social class prevailed over language during this period.
