Characteristics of Voluntary Organisations

Abstract |
The authors examined the literature on organizational theory, analysing the applicability of the theory to two Montreal voluntary organizations circa 1970 -- SOS-Volunteer Action for Social Change, and the Junior League of Montreal. The authors point out that these two organizations had similar goals and programs for training volunteers and providing community service but had a contrast in methods of operation. SOS-Volunteer Action for Social Change operated within a non-hierarchical, flexible structure open to youth who desired educational and ideological opportunities in community action projects. The Junior League of Montreal provided training for an exclusive group of women from the upper socio-economic class. The volunteers participated in projects of community service and on committees to maintain the organization. The Junior League operated within a hierarchical structure which defined the responsibilities and positions for each member and utilized formal controls to produce the desired goals of the League.
