An examination of how and on what bases students at McGill University and the Université de Montréal (the Montreal branch of Université Laval until 1919-1920) came to organize collectively and express their identities as students. The author studies how these students represented themselves in university newspapers and in their interactions with university authorities and the Quebec and Canadian broader society.
