Abstract |
The British-born William Marsden (1807-1885) immigrated to Quebec City with his parents in 1812, where his father took up teaching. William Marsden was granted a medical license by the Quebec Board of Examiners in 1830, and he opened an office that year as a "Surgeon and Accoucheur" (obstetricien). The following year he began giving public lectures in botany, and in 1835 was offering anatomy classes at the Mechanics Institute. In 1841 Marsden moved to Nicolet, where he practiced medicine for five years, before returning to Quebec City. He was active in several medical associations during his career, including the Quebec Medical Society, the Canadian Medical Association, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Lower Canada, and the Province of Quebec Health Unit. Marsden is credited with publishing more than twenty articles in medical journals such as The Philadelphia Medical and Surgical Reports and the Edinburg Medical Journal, as well as in Montreal newspapers.
