The Mysteries of Montreal: Memoirs of a Midwife
|
Abstract |
An introductory essay to this memoir, first published in 1881, describes the life of a midwife in nineteenth century Montreal. The original publication was subtitled "Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction" and the author claimed that the book was meant to "...not only astonish but startle the sedate residents of this church going community" (i.e. Montreal). The author tells a series of tales about the people of mid-nineteenth-century Montreal, rich and poor, English, Irish and French, by a midwife who served them.
