|
Abstract |
The term “benign senescent forgetfulness”, introduced in 1958 by Vojtech Adalbert Kral (1903-1988), constitutes the origins of the concept of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a widely studied but controversial psychiatric theory. The author believes that the ambiguities surrounding MCI warrant a reassessment of its historical origins. The author’s reassessment begins with a description of the patient population and professional arena in the Montreal Hebrew Old People’s and Sheltering Home, where Karl was a consultant in the mid-1950s. Based on archival and published sources, the author describes the home’s facilities, population, staff, and programs/services during that era.
