| Abstract |
In the 1820s, English-speaking settlers founded the village of Waterloo in the Eastern Townships. From the 1860s onward, Francophone settlers began to arrive in what was by then a flourishing town. By the beginning of the twentieth century, Francophones made up the majority of the community. As part of the microhistorical research project at Germany’s Ruhr-Universität Bochum under the direction of Wolfgang Helbich, the authors examine the extent to which everyday life in Waterloo was dominated by cooperation, conflict and coexistence between the two linguistic groups after 1860.
