Abstract |
An examination for the out-migration intentions of English-speaking Quebecers from the province in the mid-1970s. The author surveyed 322 Montreal English-speakers (language spoken at home) on their intentions to stay or leave Quebec. He found that Anglophones in Montreal are declining rapidly - in absolute terms and as a proportion of the population. However, he determined that political variables only had an indirect, and low impact, influence on intentions to leave Quebec. Demographic variables, on the other hand, had a strong and direct effect on intentions to emigrate. Six times more young people (18-25 years old: 18.6%) than older people (49-65 years old: 2.9%) indicated that they would “surely” leave Quebec. Those who were married were much more reluctant to leave than those who were not. Those born in Canada outside Quebec or in the United State indicated a decision to leave five times more often than those born in Quebec. Finally, those who had only spent a few years in Montreal were much more ready to pack their bags than those who had roots here.
