Abstract
A study of the dramatic demographic change within the Eastern Townships village of Compton and surrounding county at the turn of the twentieth century. As late as 1896, only twenty percent of the area residents were Francophones, the rest being English-speakers. Suddenly, between 1900 and 1910, there was a massive exodus of Compton's English-speaking residents and an equally massive influx of Francophones. The author analyzes the roots of this dramatic demographic upheaval, as well as its effects on the social, political, religious and economic structures of the area.
