Abstract |
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Quebec City region was home to important shipbuilders and lumber merchants, as the country was rich in forests and labour. While the north shore had the Anse au Foulon, forestry operations and shipyards were developed on the south shore, in the coves east of the mouth of the Chaudière River, by English-speaking merchants. It was in this area that the town of New Liverpool was born. Merchants, workers, and other inhabitants quickly settled in this predominantly Anglican hamlet. Far from living in isolation, the citizens of New Liverpool always maintained links with neighbouring communities. The author pays tribute to this former English-speaking community, focusing on the workers and families who lived there for decades. She explores the little-known aspects of the history of these Anglophones who left a rich heritage and cultural legacy. The author, who has lived in the former Christ Church of New Liverpool Anglican Church for several years, also recounts the second life of the building after it was deconsecrated in 1975.
