| Abstract |
The author explores the impact that different manufacturing trajectories had upon the particular configuration of Montreal's central district (Old Montreal) between 1850 and 1900. He demonstrates that a critical feature of the dramatic growth and the reorganization of the district's manufacturing base was the multiplicity of organizational forms and the flexibility of its built environment. The author begins with a description of the changing industrial structure of Old Montreal, the multitude of productive strategies created by the district's firms, and the remodeling of the core's built environment. This is followed by a detailed examination of the clothing and printing industries based upon municipal assessment rolls, government reports, industrial journals, and contemporary descriptions of firms and industries. The last section discusses the reasons behind the decline of Old Montreal as a manufacturing industrial district by the end of the 19th century.
