Catholic Post-Secondary Education for Women in Quebec: Its Beginnings in 1908
|
| Abstract |
The Catholic Church in Quebec, which controlled both English-language and French-language Catholic education in the province, consented in 1908 to the opening of a new dual classical college for women – L’école supérieure d’enseignement pour les jeunes filles, and its parallel English institution, Notre-Dame Collegiate Institute. The English language collegiate was later re-named Marianopolis College. The author outlines the battle undertaken by some members of the Congregation of Notre Dame with the male Catholic Church hierarchy to allow women to receive a college degree.
