| Abstract |
The author analyzes the role of the Canadian rabbinical wife (Rebbetzin) in the Jewish faith. She interviewed fifty-nine women across Canada, with the majority living in the Montreal area or Toronto, on their involvement in their communities. According to the author, the rabbinical wife is required to be gracious and attentive to the needs of the community and will frequently have people in her home for religious and social events. At the same time, her position inhibits deep relationships with the people around her. The author also outlines the place of women in Canadian Jewish history from the turn of the twentieth century to the turn of the twenty-first century, as well as Jewish religious development in Canada during this same period.
