Abstract |
The Criminal Law Amendment Act regarding abortions in Canada came into effect in August 1969. The author points out that under this legal amendment, hospitals were given the option of providing abortion service. If they made a positive response, the medical staff then faced the problem of deciding the scale of the service, and of defining the grounds for abortion. The author explains that this legal act placed a strain on the medical profession (circa 1970s), particularly in those hospitals which responded positively and established an abortion service. Often, she contends, the service was quickly established because of the immediate and pressing large demand for abortions. Yet, the service remained controversial in these early days both within the medical profession, and amongst other members of society. The author examined the adoption of abortion services at the Montreal General Hospital and outlines the attitudes of doctors, nurses, social workers and patients towards the abortion service in 1973.
