| Abstract |
The author points out that as a collective heritage of shared images, landscapes were constructed and transformed according to the vision of artists that created them. She notes that through the nineteenth century, the realist drawings of surveyor Joseph Bouchette, the picturesque engravings of William Bartlett, followed by the romantic canvases of Cornelius Kreighoff, the luminous vistas of Allan Edson and John Fraser, served to define the harmony that existed between human endeavours and the natural world. The twentieth century saw the development of the territory, the extension of towns and villages, the transformation of the natural world, but, yhe author explains, artists continued to paint the landscape for the emotions it generates: beauty, majesty and picturesque. She argues that their respective interpretations will take us through a survey of the development of landscape painting in the Eastern Townships.
