A description of a 1934 summer family automobile trip around Gaspé. Part classic travelogue and part "love-letter" to the region, the author recounts for the reader the history, legends, and myths of the Gaspé and its storied past. It is also an examination of a long-isolated Gaspé in transition, with tales of the cod fishery that still dominated the local economy and where people relied on their ingenuity for survival. The author witnessed the "opening-up" of Gaspé in the inter-war years, where new roadways and rail lines had broken the splendid isolation of the region.
