Abstract |
Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), a renowned British poet, essayist and cultural critic, visited North America for a four-month period over the winter of 1883-84. During his stay, Arnold spent ten days in Canada in February 1884, visiting Toronto, Quebec City and Montreal. At each location, he gave public lectures. The author describes Arnold's lectures at each location and their public reaction, based on newspaper accounts of the day. In Montreal, Arnold caused a sensation by, in one lecture, making uncomplimentary references to France (although he later remarked that his views were about Republican France and not the Catholic France of olden time beloved in Quebec), and at a going-away public luncheon at the Windsor Hotel remarked about the narrow mindedness of Roman Catholics, who he asserted would be better to adopt more liberal (i.e. Protestant) views if Canada were to prosper. The author examines how English Quebecers and French Quebecers reacted to Arnold's stay and comments in Quebec City and Montreal.
