| Abstract |
Using census data between 1971 and 1991, the author concludes that the relative degree of French-language assimilation during this period among recent immigrants to Quebec can be attributed to increased immigration from countries where Latin languages are spoken, or immigration from other French-speaking countries, and to a lesser extent to the obligatory French-language education mandated under Bills 22 and 101. In contrast, English-language assimilation was stronger among longer-established immigrants (e.g. Italians) and among Allophones born in Quebec.
