Abstract |
On April 25, 1849, English-speaking protesters in Montreal set fire to the Parliament building, then located in that city, over the government's passage of the Rebellion Losses Bill. This contentious piece of legislation was enacted to compensate Lower Canadians who lost property during the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838. Under the legislation, those who had participated in the Rebellions were to be compensated with taxpayer's money, except for those who had been tried and convicted of high treason. The burning of the Parliament building was the culmination of weeks of protest by English Quebecers, referred to as the "Montreal riots".
