|
Abstract |
An analysis of the artistic and editorial contributions that Betty Sutherland (1920-1984) made to print culture in Montreal during the 1940s and 1950s. Essentially a biography of Sutherland's life in Montreal, the author draws from archival research and personal interviews with Sutherland's colleagues and family members to reveal the many artistic and editorial contributions that she made to the print culture of the city, including editorial contributions to 'First Statement' magazine and her work designing book covers for First Statement Press, her role in the creation of 'Contact' magazine and her book designs for Contact Press, and her contributions to 'CIV/n' magazine as artistic director and artist.
