Abstract |
The Irish-born Jeremiah Gallagher (1837-1914) graduated from Collège de Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière in 1864 and later taught English and commercial subjects at the school. He went on to work as an engineer in Quebec City's waterworks department. He was founder of the Fenian movement in nineteenth century Quebec City, and in 1909 designed the Celtic Cross on Grosse-Île, commemorating the thousands of Irish immigrants who died and are buried at the quarantine station below Quebec City. The author uses Gallagher's involvement in the Fenian movement as an entry point into radical Irish nationalist culture in Quebec City from the late nineteenth century to the 1920s.
